There are basically two types of treadmills you can purchase for your home, motorised and manual, but what is the difference between them?
Well manual treadmills do not have motors which turn the belt for you, on a manual treadmill you move the belt with your feet, the faster you move the faster the belt will move with you. People often speculate that you will burn more calories on a manual treadmill because you are working harder to keep the belt moving. While I agree that you will initially work harder to get the treadmill belt moving you will not burn the same amount of calories compared to a motorised treadmill. Also bear in mind that you will put more strain on your joints trying to get the belt started, and because you are propelling yourself you will not be able to run at your maximum speed.
Motorised treadmills allow you to run at a constant or variable pace which is ideal if you want to run very fast and will also motivate you to keep going. You also have many other features such as the ability to plug in music or watch television on a motorised treadmill.
Conclusion
If you are a beginner it may be worth purchasing a manual treadmill as you will save on cost, but remember as you advance you will probably have to invest on a motorised treadmill. Also remember that a manual treadmill will be much lighter to move as will not have a heavy motor attached. The average price of a manual treadmill is between £80 and £150. personally I would always recommend a
motorised treadmill but be prepared to pay about £400 as a minimum.
